Good things are happening here.
Celebratory things, la verdad (truthfully)!!
Let’s begin with non-work.
WE FOUND AN APARTMENT!
Move in date- November 1, 2014.
I’m a bit skeptical!
It’s being renovated, and considering the (lack of) progress I’ve seen in the past two weeks I’m feeling doubtful.
PLEASE LET ME BE WRONG!
According to the owner it’s been under renovation since January. Which is just whack. I mean if we constructed a restaurant in 3 months from scratch, what have they been doing for 9 months to an apartment?! Big humidity problems apparently (due to the pool on the terrace! which is no longer there, boo hoo, pero bueno it’s still amazing!) and it’s a pehache which means it’s an old building and there is always maintenance which I presume wasn’t kept up hence the bad condition it was in.
But let’s focus on the positive!!
It’s flooded with natural light. The whole place. There is a terrace with enough space for a hammock, parrilla (grill) and plenty of greenery. Possibly a ping pong table will be on the terrace as well!! Connected to the terrace is a beautiful space with floor to ceiling windows and nice ceramic tiling. We are referring to this space as the ‘cool room’ and I totally envision myself doing many vinyasa flows here. It also has a full bathroom next to it. This is all upstairs on the second floor.
Down below there is a living room with an open kitchen. This is the ‘inner courtyard’ that has a large retractable roof! Indoor meets outdoors. Like a giant sunroof, house style. The new floors downstairs are pretty horrible (giant shiny hospital like tiles) but with a bit of decor love I’m hoping they’ll fade out a bit. This space is going to be a bit of a challenge to decorate, BRING IT ON.
Two bedrooms are alongside the common space with a bathroom in between.
The master bedroom has a huge built in wardrobe. Which leaves just enough space for a king bed! And not smashed up against the wall. Nope. We’re going adult style- access on both sides. I’ve never had this! (excited giggles)
The second bedroom finally has some direction! At the beginning we were lost with this space. Maybe an office? But we’ll never use it because the cool room and living are soooooo cool. Maybe a movie room? Um, no, we don’t have a TV nor do we want one!
Final result- guest room + Liza’s French closet room!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We are so blessed to have our friends come and visit all the way down here in Argentina. And generally they stay for a long time considering the distance and plane ticket. I want these friends staying with us, as they have in the past. I finally get them live in person, absolutely not will they stay somewhere else. I am selfish and want them all to myself as soon as they touch ground in Buenos Aires. I want to touch them, have mate together in the mornings, some vino at night, I want to take care of them! So now I will have a beautiful comfortable bedroom for them to stay in vs. futon in the living room!! I also want to put a little table, chair + mirror in this room. This will help bring out Parisian woman Liza!! Makeup, jewelry, headbands… all my girlie things. French Bohemian style is what I’m aiming for! Tez, Lea, y Alexandra… cuando vienen gorditas?!
The next couple of weeks we’ll be hunting for furniture, a washer machine and about a million other things. Liza’s BA dream apartment coming to life. Finally! (If anyone in BA is leaving and are getting rid of apartment stuff, please let me know!)
So yes. I’m a happy girl.
Happy and too impatient. Every morning when I wake up literally the first thought that pops into my mind is, WHEN DO I GET TO WAKE UP IN MY APARTMENT? I can see it all… while Ticol continues to sleep I will make myself a mate and pour a juice, head upstairs with Momo and be surrounded with plants, morning light + silence. This will be a dream come true!! I will practice yoga and attempt meditation before touching the electronic devices and getting flooded with work details.
So much noise in my life right now. I don’t get much silence. And with my high energy spastic self, I need the down time to balance out. It’s exhausting being so ‘up’ all the time.
‘Cool room’ will be my everything. Yoga mat, candles, music, productivity, big couch, silence, sunshine, the moon, moments with friends, happiness, life.
I’M READY, ALREADY!!
On another positive note….
One of my favorite people I met while living in NYC just moved to Buenos Aires!
^ His name is Jose and we studied together at the French Culinary Institute.
He’s a beast in the kitchen. Well, more like an octopus. A Puerto Rican pulpo if you will!
Jose… where do I begin? He grew up in Boston and moved to Puerto Rico when he was 6. He went to university and studied graphic design however the kitchen seduced him enough to walk away from the desk. Over the past decade he’s worked in many kitchens both in NYC & San Juan, some of the most notable were at Empellon Cocina and Koco before settling in as Sous Chef at the famous Danny Meyer restaurant, Union Square Cafe, where he stayed put for a handful of years.
After five years of the hustle and bustle of the NYC kitchen scene, he decided he wanted a slower pace and to walk away from the ‘big restaurant’ world. Last year when he told me he was thinking of moving to Spain I obviously responded with, ‘Fuck Spain, come to Argentina!!’ And that’s just what Jose did.
On a one way ticket and 3 suitcases filled with cookbooks, spoons, sexy ass knives, and Puerto Rican salsa music, Jose has arrived and is enjoying the BA onda.
Within hours we were cooking together at Nola, like no time had passed since our first class with Chef Jason. I love these relationships!! Those magical connections you have with some people, where you just pick back up from wherever you left off. Natural, organic, easy. That’s us.
I will learn a lot from Jose! He is far superior in the kitchen than I, and I couldn’t be more excited to work with someone I respect both professionally and personally. (Take a peek at his Instagram account) I’m looking at his presence as an ‘investment in my education and career’ on top of the greatest asset of all, being with a friend. How I miss my friends in NYC and NOLA!!!
The timing couldn’t have worked out better with the new apartment and Jose’s arrival. I love it when life does that.
So what will Jose do in BA?! Great question!
He’s figuring that out day by day. I’ll keep you posted!
One thing he will definitely be doing is taking over the Nola kitchen Monday night (October 13th) for a Puerto Rican Pop-Up.
Y’all must come!!
Him and I will also be cooking together every Sunday night at Nola. SUPER EXCITED FOR THAT.
He’ll also be using that talented and creative brain of his and coming up with some new dishes at Nola and help me figure out the changes for Spring and Summer regarding the menu.
Am I not the luckiest girl in the world?
And him and Ticol are so cute together. They’ve become instant bff. I should get them matching bracelets.
So yea, life is good!
I guess I shouldn’t be counting down the days. Every day is amazing. So much love and happiness in my life, I’m beyond grateful.
And I’m fucking pumped to have Marce back! I love you, hermano, so many good things are coming your way, I know it. Ah si, Y FELIZ CUMPLE!
Will keep y’all posted and hope to see you Monday for some Caribbean goodness!!
