In 2005 I had my first NY bagel at the age of 21.
Being a cream cheese hater and a biscuit lover there was no desire nor trend to eat them down South. The only holey doughs I ate were from McKenzie’s Bakery for their famous buttermilk drops and my favorite chocolate covered rainbow sprinkled doughnuts from Tastees.
The despise of cream cheese quickly faded after relocating to the big apple, living blocks away from Murray’s Bagels in Greenwich Village.
Ideally they are not how I want to jump start my metabolism in the morning, but at 5am when leaving work and needing something to soak up the booze an everything bagel with extra bacon and scallion cream cheese didn’t seem like such a bad idea.
Oh how I miss NYC….and the 21 year old metabolism!
Here in Buenos Aires I have stumbled upon 3 places selling sad naked un-toasted bagels. Por suerte Diego Macadar has elevated the bagel scene providing us with QuieroBagels, quality fresh bagels along with excellent customer service, something this city is DEFINITELY not known for.
I received my first order via delivery, on time and packaged to perfection. He instructs me to place them in a preheated oven for 15 minutes for the maximum bagel experience.
I decide to start with the sesame and tossed the rest in the freezer for another day. I had turned the oven on 15 minutes before he arrived in anticipation.
The bagel increased in size when finished in the oven and resulted in a crunchy on the outside yet soft and chewy in the inside. With no cream cheese in the house I quickly jammed some butter in the middle and placed it the broiler for another minute or two. Hands down best bagel I’ve had South of the Gulf of Mexico.
I’m not a bagel girl that likes to add a bunch of fillings- eggs, lox, cheese, it’s too much for me. If it’s a good bagel it doesn’t need to be masked by fillers.
I chose to bust out my oh so addictive Pepperland Farm Raspberry & Chipotle Pepper Jelly to accompany my frutilla bagel. Delicious however a layer of cream cheese was definitely missed to balance out the sweetness and spiciness of the jelly.
Surprisingly the healthier blueberry bagel was packing lots of flavor and was the most liked amongst the household. I’m a huge fan of blueberry muffins but always opt for salty over sweet when it comes to breads, ESPECIALLY if it has olives. Maybe something for the future, Diego? All in all, a great bagel experience- no issues with ordering- delivered to my doorstep on time- FRESH delicious bagels. I think my next tasting will be everything, onion, and zen.
